As the sun sets over Marina Bay, one of Singapore’s chicest bars comes to life. What started off as a mobile pop-up bar is now a bar permanently perched on Esplanade’s rooftop. Japanese mixologist Tomoyuki Kitazoe’s dishy, handcrafted cocktails conspire with the views of Marina Bay Sands to deliver an immensely satisfying night on the town.
It was one of those evenings where we just wanted to slow down, unwind and ‘figuratively’ smell the roses after a long day. Which was why we decided to head to Orgo, arguably the best-looking and most stylish rooftop bar in town. There, we settled happily for an icy cold margarita with a rim of rose salt, just one of the many unique drinks that this artisan cocktail bar has to offer.
From its advantageous rooftop location at the iconic Esplanade, Orgo managed to simultaneously soothe and excite all of our senses. The view was phenomenal; our heads had to literally turn 180 degrees to fully take in the bright lights of Singapore’s amazing skyline reflecting off Marina Bay’s waters, the intense glimmer of the twin domes, and the magnificence of the tall statuesque buildings lined up opposite. Conceived as a bar without walls, the glass modules enhanced the entire fabric and atmosphere of the place. Dimly lit, tranquil and blessed with a constant breeze, we made mental notes to make reservations for future romantic night outs.
Of course at Orgo, their drinks are the biggest draw. The bar is helmed by renowned Japanese master mixologist, Tomoyuki Kitazoe. With a zeal to revolutionalize the mixology landscape in Singapore, Tomoyuki eliminates all processed ingredients as far as possible, designing a series of cocktails based on fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs, all jazzed with a dash of creativity. Their cocktail menu is seasonal, updated periodically to ensure that only the freshest and finest ingredients available are used.
We recommend the signature Soursop & Calamansi martini, a tangy blend of refreshing soursop, calamansi limes and Grey Goose Super Premium Vodka. The Extra Dirty Martini was also a classic executed well, the savouriness brightened with a lemon twist. One of us, with a sweet tooth, decided to try the Roasted Apple Pie cocktail. Tomoyuki wouldn’t (obviously) reveal his ingredient list but it tasted just like a hearty homemade apple pie dangerously spiked with vodka. The long list of extraordinary martinis, daiquiris, margaritas, mojitos and fruit beer cocktails is mind-boggling, but it is a good problem to have. It just means repeated visits to this cool, cosmopolitan and innovative bar.
